October is DV Awareness Month
This October, for domestic violence awareness month, the Family Center is launching a White Ribbon Campaign. The White Ribbon Campaign is a call to men, all men, to put an end to domestic violence. We are specifically adressing well-meaning men to serve as role models and advocates to end violence against women. While domestic violence does affect everyone, the vast majority of victims are women. The first White Ribbon Campaign was launched in 1991 by a group of men in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It has since spread to more than 57 other countries as a means to reshape how men define their place in society. Understanding the role of male privelege in creating an environment that fosters abusive behavior towards women is key to the goals set forth by the White Ribbon Campaign. This year, A Call to Men, an organization that operates to end men's violence against women, is offering their Men's Institute in Milwaukee on September 23, 24, and 25.
